'Interstellar' : Hollywood Sci-Fi movie

The first thing I want to say about "Interstellar" is that it is the best movie I have ever seen in my life. I saw it seven times in the theaters, with each showing finding gems which I had missed in previous viewings. This movie had everything going for it: appealing, believable characters acted flawlessly; a fantastic and highly believable story; amazing special effects; and a musical score so beautiful it could bring tears to your eyes.

Interstellar is not primarily a Sci-Fi movie; it is mostly a story about love and the responsibilities of love. The rockets, weird planets, black holes and so forth are just a setting for the story -- a spectacular setting -- and motivation to move the story along. Duty clashes with love, too, in Interstellar, and the story wraps itself around those clashes. A father loves his son and daughter but his only chance to save them is to leave them. He loves the woman too, but to save her -- and the mission -- he must leave her also. Lots to think about in this movie, and lots to feel too.

The story in this movie is fantastic, utterly believable, and smart. That the writers paid homage to "2001" is obvious. Unlike 2001, however, everything is explained in this movie. I saw 2001 when it first came out. At the end of 2001 I was still glued to my seat, but I was sitting there asking myself, "What just happened?" Interstellar is the exact opposite: at the end it all makes sense, the weirdness is all explained. Very, very satisfying.

The special effects were superb, the best ever. They actually hired a REAL black hole physicist to work out the equations describing how a spinning black hole with an accretion disk would behave, and then the animators drew the black hole scenes in accordance with those equations. Imagine that! Real, heavy-duty science in a Hollywood Sci-Fi movie! The scenes around the black hole were Science, not Science Fiction. They even put the actual equations on a blackboard shown in the movie.

The acting was flawless. The young actress who played the young "Murph" created one of the most appealing youngsters in film history. Even the robots were more human than many actors have portrayed humans in other movies.

Having seen the movie seven times I also spotted some flaws too. Sorry, dear script writers, but clouds which freeze do not stay in the sky, they fall as snow. And glaciers do not form ceilings above vast, empty spaces; ice flows and it would go down to lay upon the land. Your second planet was therefore not believable and was far and away the biggest flaw in the movie. Your first planet was entirely believable. And brilliant! But I won't say how here. And Dr. Brand, the younger, gives up her argument way too easily regarding which planet to visit second. Real heroines just don't fold like that. And there were a few lesser flaws too, but the power of the rest of the movie overwhelms all of the flaws.

The musical score was second to none. Highly emotive, it fit the story like a glove fits a hand. Perfect. It could and did bring tears to my eyes, tears of beauty.
